Bigger and Better – Colossal Review

"Colossal" is a movie that centers on the theme of becoming something bigger than yourself – literally.

The story follows Gloria (played by Anne Hathaway), a broke, jobless woman who’s just been kicked out by her boyfriend. Her seemingly uneventful life takes a turn when a giant monster appears in Seoul – a monster that follows her every move. Things get even more interesting when a giant robot controlled by her childhood friend Oscar also materialises in the Korean capital city.

The entire plot is a gradual progression from something light-hearted and fun to something (no spoilers though!) that left me staring open-mouthed at the screen for a good five minutes after the film ended. I was genuinely surprised by how serious the movie turned out to be halfway through.

It went from a comedy to an I’m-not-sure-if-this-is-a-psycological-thriller-or-horror-anymore kind of movie in 0.01 seconds flat. I was especially intrigued by how the scriptwriters slipped in a few references to the themes of childhood and feeling small in a big, big world.

     On top of that, I loved the emotions so aptly portrayed by Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudeikis (who plays Oscar), as their characters shift from mutually supportive friends to something much darker. Full of suspense with some nicely placed jabs of humour, it’s a movie that I’d definitely want to watch again.
